What is LiPS?

LiPS stands for the Linux Phone Standards Forum, an organisation founded in November 2005 to accelerate the adoption of Linux in telephony devices by standardising Linux-based services and APIs.

LiPS says it "has a clearly defined role and set of deliverables (LiPS Outputs) and will work closely with existing forums such as OSDL ( Open Source Development Labs) and OMTP (Open Mobile Terminal Platform) to ensure that initiatives are consistent and aligned with the needs of the telephony industry."

In other words it has been founded to promote the widespread adoption of Linux by manufacturers of mobile phones.

The founding members of LiPS are ARM, Cellon, Esmertec, France Telecom/Orange, FSM Labs, Huawei, Jaluna, MIZI Research, MontaVista Software, Open-Plug and PalmSource.
