Unique worldwide: Check-in for Swissair flights with the WAP mobile phone

[December 16, 1999] Swissair is introducing a new interactive service that allows customers to check-in for a flight via the latest communication technology. Passengers need only use their wireless application protocol, or WAP , mobile phone. It's that simple. Swissair is the first airline in the world to offer this service to customers. It is available as of December 16. The system was developed by Swissair in close cooperation with the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory and initially allows selected frequent flyers the possibility to check-in for flights departing from Zurich (including any connecting and/or return flights). Check-in is confirmed on the telephone display window - including flight number, exact time of departure, gate and seat assignment. Once the customer has checked-in they will automatically be kept up-to-date if there are any changes to the flight. These updates will also appear on the phone's display window. An entire array of new interactive services are planned for the future. Passengers will be able to check seat availability on a given flight, book a seat, confirm or re-book a flight. Swissair will also actively communicate with customers via the WAP mobile phone, informing them, for example, of alternate booking possibilities in case a flight is delayed. These suggestions would be confirmed simply by pressing a button on the phone.

Comfort throughout the entire journey Swissair not only wants to make flying as pleasant as possible, but the entire journey from A to B, particularly any trip preparations, check-in and the stay at the airport. Swissair realised three future-oriented projects in 1999 on the basis of the airline's "We Care" philosophy: CLIP contains all the significant information on a passenger and their travels. The information is forwarded along a chain of staff that enables both ground-based and cabin staff to look after individual wishes in a targeted and unbureaucratic manner.

The Swissair Care Center functions as a type of extended flight attendant service, taking note of passenger wishes around the clock or providing support to stations outside Switzerland in case of irregularities. This service, for example, makes alternative flight bookings or car and hotel reservations The Fast Track System saves passengers the time and trouble of conventional check-in by utilising a card containing a microchip that identifies the passenger at the passport control station. This makes additional check-in obsolete and allows paperless access to lounges, and later on, to gates

By introducing the WAP mobile phone check-in service Swissair has gone a decisive step further in taking full advantage of the most sophisticated communication technology available. In a pioneering role, Swissair provides the individual customer with tailor-made services they can use irrespective of time or location.
