WAP - a very short explanation

The Wireless Access Protocol (WAP) specifications were originally drawn up back in February 1998 by leading handset suppliers - Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia - in conjunction with Phone.com (then known as Unwired Planet) - a specialist Californian software company. Now there is the WAP Forum, an industry association with members representing a complete cross-section of the mobile communications industry. WAP has been deliberately designed to work across a whole range of wireless devices. This means that it will work with all types of mobile handset found worldwide. The list includes CDMA (IS-95 or IS-707); TDMA/D-AMPS (IS-136) and GSM (900, 1800 & 1900 MHz). Additionally it will work with cordless digital/WLL standards such as DECT but more importantly it is also suitable for dedicated data standards such as CDPD; Mobitex (from Ericsson); DataTAC and iDEN (ESMR) plus paging standards like FLEX and ReFLEX from Motorola.
