Go2 picks WAP for location serviceGo2 Systems Inc. said it has made more than 300 topic-specific Web sites available to users of any mobile phone with Internet capability. These sites enable users to turn to their phones or other wireless Web devices for information on local merchants, including directions to stores, store hours, parking and sale specials. Go2's services and information will be offered through mobile platform providers such as Phone.com, which makes software to translate Web pages into cell-phone screens. The topic-specific Go2 Web sites, called Go2 NetGates, deliver listings, ranked by proximity to the user, of more than 11 million stores and destinations. The NetGates represent a large portion of the U.S. Web sites now available via wireless Internet access. Go2 said it plans to eventually develop as many as 2,000 additional topic-specific sites. The vendor's patented world geographic reference system technology is compatible with the wireless applications protocol (WAP), an open, global specification enabling access to information and services using wireless devices. Go2's WAP-ready sites are also compatible with the Wireless Mark-Up Language (WML) and the Handheld Device Mark-Up Language (HDML), making the sites easy to view on portable devices. The vendor said that each site is capable of knowing what type of browser is being used for access, and automatically delivering data suited for PCs or portable devices such as mobile phones. "Our Web sites enable users to seamlessly find, navigate to and transact business with real-world locations, bringing the power of the Internet to a user's mobile phone," said Lee Hancock, president of Go2. The sites are accessible by specific topics, such as Go2coffee.com, Go2hotels.com, Go2burgers.com or Go2banks.com. Real-time information is provided based on the user's precise location or intended destination. "We see the technology being used by travelling business people who rent cars featuring navigation systems, as well as by fleet management companies as an interface for making deliveries," Hancock said. Go2 technology consists of two basic addressing components which allow users to quickly identify starting points or destinations for mapping, directions and real-world searches. Go2 Addresses service identifies real-world locations with assigned and registered names, similar to domain names for real-world locations. For example, Johnny Rockets Restaurant in Irvine, Calif., can be specifically identified by its Go2 Address, us.ca.IRV.JROCK. In most situations IRV.JROCK will be all a user needs to input into a desktop computer, cell phone, personal digital assistant or car navigation system.
