Claro announces Claro Direto[September 16th 2004] The cellular telephony operator Claro is announcing its new Claro Direto service, which features Push to Talk over Cellular (PoC) technology. Claro Direto allows subscribers to communicate via the push of a button - making it quicker and easier to share information one-on-one or in a group. The new service complements Claro's offerings for the corporate segment and is aimed at companies wanting to speed up the work and increase the productivity of their teams and field personnel in the most diverse areas, such as sales, marketing, logistics, security and maintenance, among others. "The new service integrates teams of employees, suppliers, customers and partners rapidly and easily, " says Michel Piestun, the director responsible for Claro's corporate segment. Claro Direto's PoC service is easy to operate: instead of dialing a number to start a conversation, you press a button, go to a "buddy list" and select the person or group you want to contact, press the button again, and start talking. The service permits visualization in the set of who is available to receive the call. It is possible, for example, to only contact people who are not in a meeting. Management can be executed via Web, as in instant messaging systems. The Claro Direto proposal is to offer coverage over the whole Claro national network, with the advantage of being able to use a single number for cellular and for direct communication. "Claro direto represents an advance in radio communication and the costs are very attractive," says Piestun, pointing out that the long distance charges are the same as local ones, as long as the call is in the Claro coverage area. Even if the users are in cities with different area codes, there is no need to dial the service provider code. The client company can also request the Custom Plan at an extra monthly charge per user, allowing unlimited individual calls over Claro Direto, or may opt only for the Claro Direto service paying a monthly rate for unlimited and individual calls. The Claro Direto voice connection is done over IP, the voice is transformed into data packets that are transmitted via GPRS - General Packet Radio Service - or EDGE - Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution technologies - to the destination terminal, which transforms them into voice packets again. Claro Direto will be available from the end of the month. In this initial phase, the product may be used be a reduced number of customers in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Paraná and Santa Catarina, who will conduct the necessary tests for the service. In the coming months, Claro Direto will be available in other regions covered by Claro. Initially the service will be offered with the Motorola V400p handset. It has a dedicated PoC key and contact list management by presence (PTT buddy list). It works on four different bands - 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1,8 GHz and 1,9 GHz -, meaning it is possible to make and receive calls any place in the world where GSM/GPRS technology is used, as well as roaming agreements w/ local operators. "PoC is gaining users worldwide as a key technology. It benefits subscribers in a simple, fast and efficient way," said Sergio Buniac, Sales Director for Personal Communication Sector, Motorola Brazil. About Claro Claro is a nationwide cellular carrier with 11.1 million customers in Brazil.
