Vodafone UK steals a march with Twitter receivesby Tony DennisThe news has just broken that - for the first time in the UK - it is now possible to receive your tweets on a mobile handset via SMS. Before this is was only possible to send Tweets via SMS as a Brit. The facility to receive tweets has long been possible in the US and Canada and I note that it's also possible to do so in India as well. The shortcode for UK Vodafone customers is 86444 and you can activate your mobile in your Twitter settings. I tried it and nothing happened so I sent the word 'ON' to 86444 and at least got an acknowledgement. The Twitter blog says that, "for the first few weeks, sending tweets won't even affect your bundle. Receiving tweets via SMS on your mobile is totally free." A bit vague on the time scale. After the initial trial period, sending tweets from your mobile will be part of a Vodafone subscriber's normal text messaging bundle. But get this - RECEIVING tweets is absolutely free. This has led to speculation as to how many other UK operators will follow suite given the traffic it will generate over their networks and they won't be getting any revenue from it. You can try changing your personal Twitter settings by going here. |
