OMTP gets more backing for BONDI

by Tony Dennis

The Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP) –the power behind Google phones - has gained extra support for its 'BONDI' initiative from Azingo and Ikivo – two prominent mobile software houses.

It's something of a triumph for the OMTP given that Azingo proudly boasts of its ability to supply products to Vodafone based on the Limo.

So what exactly is BONDI? Theoretically it  enables web applications to access native functionality on mobile handsets consistently across different platforms.

BONDI apparently  also delivers an appropriate security layer to protect the user from malware. Commercial implementations of BONDI should start to appear Q3-Q4 2009.

Bradley Sipes, CTO with Ikivo has commented, "[We] strongly believe in the importance of securing interoperable widget capabilities, like device APIs. We look forward to contributing to the work already conducted in BONDI."

According to Mahesh Veerina,C EO with Azingo, "BONDI specifications will enable developers to create secure web applications across a range of platforms and devices.

It  will create a truly open eco system for developers." More information about BONDI can be gleaned from here .
